Of course! We have lots of Stand up Paddleboards, single kayaks, and double kayaks, so no matter how large your group is or how people want to get on the water they can do it at Island Paddleboard!
Many people begin stand up paddling without a lesson, although those people are usually the ones you see drifting out to sea on the outgoing tide… Just kidding! A lesson is definitely not necessary to learn how to stand up paddle. Many people have taught themselves the sport without instruction.
However, our expert instructors have taught hundreds how to properly SUP in Newport Beach, and nearly every single person has reported being glad they took the lesson, and that they got more than they thought they would out of it! Lessons cover safety, conditions, SUP equipment, proper stance, maneuvering, water entry/exit, and of course paddling technique. At the end of a lesson, our students are more knowledgeable and have better technique than 90% of paddlers. By starting with a lesson, many of the bad habits that people pick up as they learn the sport themselves are avoided. Plus, you can avoid falling into the water! Which brings us to the next question…
Science is showing that spending your money on experiences is a better investment in your happiness than spending your money on things.

Long story short, want to be happy? Come down to Island Paddleboard and go for a paddle!
Parking for Island Paddleboard is FREE on the residential streets surrounding the shop. During summer, and on weekends with nice weather the Island is a busy place and parking can be a challenge. However, we will let you in on a couple of local secrets that offer virtually guaranteed parking even on the busiest days.
Secret #1, “Little Balboa Island”
Drive to the end of Marine Avenue (the street we are on), then take a left on Park Avenue. This will take you across a small bridge and over to Little Balboa Island. Parking is less congested on the “little Island” and it is still just a short walk over to the shop.

Secret #2 “Bayside Drive”
The last cross street before you drive onto Balboa Island is called Bayside Drive. To the West of Jamboree Road, Bayside Drive has over a mile of wide open unrestricted free parking. Parking is always open and free here!
When you park on Bayside you will need to walk over the Big Island Bridge to get to our store. It is 6 blocks and will take around 8 minutes. If you have a group, you might want to drop everyone on the Island and then go back and park on Bayside. The walk itself is very scenic over the bridge and is a nice outing on it’s own. During the walk, you will get a good preview of the areas that you are about to paddle!

If you decide to rent a Stand Up Paddleboard from Island Paddleboard for your first time without taking a lesson, we have created a special page just for you that gives some important basics to help you get the most from your experience
Our shop is on Balboa Island, inside of Newport Harbor. This means we are surrounded by calm, flat, protected water. The calmer the water, the easier it is to paddle. We are very close to the protected sanctuary of the North Bay Front of Balboa Island. The beach and water there are on the lee side of Balboa Island which means that it is protected from wind, waves, and boat traffic. It is an ideal spot for learning to paddle, a relaxing family paddle, or a fast flat-water workout.
We rent Surftech Stand Up Paddleboards. Our boards are extra large and really stable. Our rental boards are 11 feet 6 inches long, 32 inches wide, and just over 5 inches thick! What this means is they float really well and are super easy to balance on! We feature paddles from QuickBlade. The paddles are light weight, ultra strong and adjust to fit anyone!
We rent the highest quality boards and paddles. But don’t just take our word for it. Look closely at the photo below. Cindy is paddling with a Surftech board and Quickblade paddle!
Our boards are great for families too! A family of four can rent two boards. Mom and dad can each paddle a board and the little one’s can sit on the front!
Yes, it is true. There is a crazy swan that lives in Newport Harbor. If you want to find out more about this swan go to our Tricks and Tips, FAQs page.
